Key findings

Tolerance is declining, xenophobia is spreading, without this being accompanied by an increase in acts or threats coming within the force of the law. The confirmation of the downward trend, in 2011, of manifestations of racism and anti-Semitism does not however hide attacks to property and people for their membership of Islam, which are moving in the opposite direction. One observes in 2011 a form of protectionist racism against a supposed threat, the fact that this is constructed socially and in the media and is not based on any factual study does not prevent people from holding the perception.

Methodology (Qualitative/Quantitative and exact type used, questionnaires etc)

Quantitative: A face-to-face survey carried out from 28 November to 5 December 2011. The questionnaire was designed by the members of the CNCDH with the survey organisation.

Sample details and representativeness

Public survey - 1033 adult respondents living in metropolitan France
